What Defines Meditation?

Does meditation always mean sitting quietly on a zafu or zabuton? Can ordinary acts become acts of meditation?

Yes. One very simple, but very powerful meditation is a walking meditation. As you take each step, focus on what your body is feeling. The shifting of your weight. The slight totter or wobble as you move from one foot to another. The sensation of the ground beneath your feet. In particular I like to do this type of meditation barefoot because I can more readily feel the sensations under my feet.

Other acts can also become acts of meditation, as actor Harrison Ford expressed:

The focus and the concentration and the attention to detail that flying takes is a kind of meditation. I find it restful and engaging, and other things slip away.
